Key Won't Turn in Ignition

When a key will not turn in the ignition, the cause may be steering wheel tension, shifter position, a worn key, a lock cylinder issue, or a battery-related interlock.

Call 915-294-4090

When a key will not turn in the ignition, the vehicle may not need a tow right away. Some ignition lock problems come from steering wheel tension or a shifter that is not fully in park. Others come from a worn key, damaged cylinder, or an electrical interlock that needs a technician.

If you are stranded in El Paso and cannot safely move the vehicle, call El Paso’s Towing Service. For a locked vehicle with keys inside, use car lockout service. For a vehicle that cannot be started or shifted, flatbed towing may be the cleaner option.

Quick Safety Rule

Do not force the key. A snapped key or damaged cylinder turns a simple roadside problem into a more expensive repair.

A Simple Ignition Triage Chart

Key will not turn: safe sequence
1. Stop forcing
A broken key makes the problem harder.
2. Relieve wheel tension
Move the steering wheel gently while turning.
3. Confirm park
Brake pedal down, shifter fully seated.
4. Call if stuck
Request towing if it still will not turn.

When This Becomes a Towing Call

The key problem becomes a towing call when the vehicle cannot be started, cannot be shifted safely, blocks a lane or driveway, or sits somewhere that creates a security risk. If the vehicle needs a locksmith or repair shop, towing may be faster than waiting in an unsafe spot.

El Paso’s Towing Service provides roadside assistance and towing across El Paso. If the vehicle is in a tight parking lot or garage, mention the clearance, steering position, and whether the wheels are turned.

What to Tell Dispatch

  • Whether the key is metal, push-button, or fob-based.
  • Whether the steering wheel is locked.
  • Whether the shifter can move.
  • Whether the vehicle is front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, AWD, or unknown.
  • Whether the car is in a garage, apartment lot, workplace lot, or roadside shoulder.

If the key is locked inside the vehicle, see car lockout and unlock service. If the car will not start after the key turns, read car not starting but battery is fine once that guide is published, or call 915-294-4090 for help now.
